History

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on January 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., by a visionary group of sixteen students led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. At a time when opportunities for African-American women were extremely limited, the establishment of the sorority marked a groundbreaking moment, empowering women to lead and serve in spaces where they previously had little influence. In 1913, five years after its founding, Nellie Quander, as lead incorporator, secured the organization’s legacy by incorporating Alpha Kappa Alpha in the District of Columbia.

Today, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is a global organization composed of college-educated women from diverse backgrounds. With a membership exceeding 300,000 women, the sorority is represented by 1,012 chapters across the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Germany, Liberia, South Korea, Japan, Canada, South Africa, and the Middle East. Membership is open to women through undergraduate chapters at accredited colleges and universities, or through graduate chapters for those who have earned an undergraduate or advanced degree.
